Reasons Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Working

Reasons Your Air Conditioner Isn’t Working

An air conditioner isn’t something we think about often or remember to maintain, but when it stops working on a hot day, we suddenly remember how important it is! If your air conditioner isn’t working properly, there could be a number of reasons why; several of which can be prevented by scheduling regular AC maintenance in Apopka.

Why Is My AC Not Turning On?

It doesn’t matter which kind of air conditioner system you use, central, mini-split, or window AC; they all share similarities in how they function. With that in mind, here are some universal reasons your AC unit might not be working. Before calling an expert, here are a few things you can check yourself:
  • Check the breaker box for tripped breakers and reset them if necessary
  • Reset your thermostat by turning the dial back to “off” and then back to where you want it set
  • Ensure enough insulation around the unit to keep it from getting too cold
  • Check for loose wires or other damage

Why Is My AC Not Cooling the House?

This one can be tricky since the symptoms can vary widely. However, if you are sure that your air conditioner is working, then here are some common reasons why it may not be cooling your home:

Dirty Air Filter

If your air conditioner is blowing hot air, the first thing you should do is check the air filter. Air filters can get dirty, and when they get clogged up with dust and dirt, they restrict airflow and reduce the cooling efficiency. If you’ve had your unit for a while and haven’t changed the filter, now’s the time to do so. We highly recommend you change your air filter every one to three months.

Damaged Compressor

If your air conditioning unit appears to be running but isn’t producing cold air, there’s a good chance something is wrong with its compressor. The compressor is what pumps refrigerant around inside your system so that it can absorb heat from inside your home and release cold air into it instead.
If the compressor is damaged, it won’t produce cold air and will need to be replaced. The compressor can get damaged by various things, including physical damage from being dropped or corrosion caused by water leaking into the unit.

Burnt Out Condenser Fan Motor

Another common problem with air conditioners is getting their condenser fan motors burnt out. It can happen because of several reasons; for example, it could be due to a foreign object getting sucked into the motor or because there’s been a power surge that has damaged its internal wiring. Either way, you’ll need to replace this component before you can use your unit again.
If the condenser fan motor has burned out, your AC won’t cool the house, and you’ll hear a loud humming noise from inside the unit. You may also notice that the compressor is running but not cooling anything. If this is the case, you’ll need to replace the motor as soon as possible.

Condensate Pump Is Failing

A condensate pump removes excess moisture from the indoor coil and pumps it outside through a drainage pipe. If this system isn’t working correctly, water can accumulate on your floor or in the pan under your unit and cause damage to the compressor and other components. Therefore, you need to get a bad condensate pump replaced immediately before any damage occurs.

Blocked Vents Reducing Air Flow

If leaves or other debris are stuck in your vents, this can reduce airflow through them and cause your system to work harder than usual. You may also experience problems if construction has blocked off some of your vents.
If you have any questions about whether or not something is blocking an opening in your home’s exterior wall that should be open, call a professional to help identify and address any issues that might arise from those obstructions.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

If your evaporator coil is frozen, it won’t be able to transfer heat from inside the house to outside. As a result, too much heat builds up inside the home, making it feel stuffy and hot. The only solution is to defrost the evaporator coil by turning off the thermostat and keeping a window open for several hours until it thaws out.

The AC Doesn't Have Enough Coolant

This one is typically related to maintenance issues with the equipment. For example, if your system has been neglected for longer than it should have been, then there may be enough coolant left to keep it running but not enough left to keep it working at total capacity until you can fix the problem correctly.

If you’re experiencing any of these issues and your AC unit is more than ten years old, it may be time to replace it rather than get air conditioning repairs in Apopka, FL. An older unit will be less energy-efficient and may need repairing more often.
